Photo etching, otherwise named photochemical machining, is an artistic practice that combines factors of photography and traditional etching. Like normal etching it's a form of printmaking that requires carving a design in a metal plate through acid. The plate are able to be inked and hard pressed against sheets of paper to deliver the final print. Photo etching involves installing a photographic image onto the plate in ways that the acid eats away the unexposed regions of the image. The result is often a plate that can create photorealistic prints.
Materials
Photo etching is comparable to traditional darkroom photography. Thus it uses the majority of the same materials including a photo on film or other translucent medium in addition to a light source that can project throughout the image. Rather than snapshot paper, artists use some sort of metal plates (usually zinc), any photosensitive emulsion and acetone designer. The process also calls for acid, ink, paper and an etching press otherwise referred to as an "intaglio press. "
Process
The artisan coats the plate along with the photosensitive emulsion and projects light via the image onto the menu. The emulsion on the plate hardens in every one the areas exposed to help light, making these parts resistant to acid. The artist then uses acetone developer to build the image appear over the plate. After a rinse the plate assumes an acid bath which creates recesses during the unexposed areas, making the image looks as if it has been lifted straight from the plate. The artist then inks typically the plate and presses it again against a sheet of paper during the etching press to create the total print.
Additional Techniques
Artists might make refinements to the piece by excluding elements of the image from appearing on the final print. This can be performed by scraping or cutting away patches of the plate. Artists may cause additional areas appearing in the final screen-print by covering areas within an acid resistant material following your exposure and before your acid bath.
Depth
Artists are able to adjust the thickness on the emulsion to add dimension towards the etching. By making the emulsion thicker in certain areas than in people, the artist creates areas that which can be more resistant to a acid than others. Thus the acid immediately eats away along at the areas with no emulsion, progressively eats away at locations with thin emulsion and even leaves areas with firm emulsion untouched. The result is undoubtedly an etching with a split quality.
