How to perform Dramatic Portrait Lighting

Portrait shooters typically light their subjects well from a number of different angles with soft light, to capture as much detail as they can be without harsh shadows and angular lighting. Of training course, norms are there that they are broken. Photographers can toss the conventional portraiture approaches and replace them to get dramatic effect. Dramatic family portrait photography techniques include tough lighting, back-lit subjects and harsh shadows that cover over facial detail.

Instructions

    1

Use the back light. Aiming a strobe in the rear of the subjects head or perhaps positioning the subject in order that the strongest natural light supplier is directly behind will leave high of the face and human body in deep, harsh darkness.

    2

Remove mild softeners. Diffusers on strobes as well as camera flashes, window curtains and umbrella coverings is removed to give individual a hard, angular lightweight.

    3

Try an extreme outlook. Rather than the traditional three-quarter profile or encounter portrait, try shooting from subjects feet or through an angle high on top of the subjects face.

    4

Use frugal lighting. You can enjoy a dramatic effect by just selectively lighting the people eyes or other makeup feature, leaving the other countries in the face in shadow. A well-aimed strobe or controllable sunlight source, such as window treatments, can help to accomplish that look.
